About Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu (Japanese - "finger pressure") is a Japanese energy-based bodywork technique following the Chinese meridian system of energetic lines that run through the body – the same lines that are followed for acupuncture and acupressure – however in shiatsu we use our hands (and elbows, knees, feet and forearms) to work the energy lines.

What does a session look like?

Sessions are performed clothed, on a soft cushy mat on the floor and are designed to re-balance, clear and un-stick the energy, blood, fluid etc that are constantly flowing through you. Like rivers, our bodies collect debris that can cause blockages and imbalances. Though truly an energy work, through palming, finger pressure, stretching, compression, jostling and other techniques, your muscles, bones and connective tissue will all be well attended to.

What are the benefits of this kind of work?

– decreased anxiety
– improved sleep
– improved circulation
– increased flexibility,
– heightened proprioception (sensing your body in space), and much more.

Some conditions that can be alleviated through shiatsu include migraines & headaches, insomnia, tendonitis & other forms of inflammation (including IBS), anxiety, depression, stiffness in joints, back pain, and many other imbalances that cause pain, discomfort & malaise.

Why should I choose shiatsu?

Based in Asian healthcare principles, shiatsu is used as a way to maintain healthiness, correct minor problems before they elevate, and allow you a chance to check in with your current state, breathe and rest. Done regularly (monthly, every 3 weeks, whatever works for you) this kind of bodywork can bring a sense of harmony into your body, your mind and your spirit, and is a wonderful place to release that which is no longer serving you, and breathe in deep, fresh energy to places you may not ordinarily notice or feel. It also, simply put, feels great.
